Once again, in our society, the voices of a few are determining policy for all. This is not right, nor is it fair, and it does much to damage the educational process. Educators have a responsibility to help students prepare to become citizens of this country with the knowledge and skills to effectively make decisions for and contributions to society. How can teachers possibly accomplish this task, when their hands are tied by legislation which serves to limit the resources available to them? Sensitive is a relative term, that means different things to different people. Why not allow highly qualified, college-educated teachers to use their best judgment when selecting materials to use in the classroom? Nowhere in the proposed legislation is student or parent accountability mentioned. How about parents and students reading the course syllabus, looking at the materials the teacher intends to use, and if there is an objection, bring it up with the teacher? Will Librarians have to label each book with a warning for possible objectionable material? This is silly. VOTE NO!!
