My own mother did not have the opportunity in the 50s to read the richness of Shakespeare for the very reason, "it was too controversial." With tactful guidance and emphasis on curricular instruction, The Catcher in the Rye, even with its abrasive language, opens the real world to our students. Let individual School Districts determine the reading material; each district has its policies to deal with parental objections that are endemic for that district's community. At times, the common good is relinquised to the outspoken few...
