Please reject this amendment. Although on the surface this amendment appears to be looking out for children's best interests, it will in fact hurt them, as well as hurt the teachers across the state of VA. Most school systems are promoting critical thinking and 21st Century skills. Learning how to deal with "sensitive" information is one of those. How can we teach students to appropriately respond to material or people they disagree with if teachers are limited to the texts they use? This country is becoming more diverse every day, and it would be a great disservice to the students in the VA education system to restrict their access to reading material because some narrow-minded parent thinks the material is offensive.
If you do pass this amendment, you are going to lose a lot of good teachers, especially in areas where commuting to WV or MD or neighboring states isn't out of the question. Furthermore, there's always so much talk about how to recruit better teachers. Well, this is not one of the ways you do that. In fact, passing this amendment further belittles the teaching profession and sends the message that teachers' opinions are not to be respected.
