Renewables sounds great, but they are "snake oil". Only good for the seller. Leaky roofs don't show up right away, but anything on a roof will cause leaks in ten years or less. If your home isn't a tear down, plan on an expensive re-roofing and reinstalling of your solar panels. Most places in the U.S don't get enough sun to justify a solar installation. Wind would be great if the structures could withstand the force and generate at all wind speeds, but they cannot. If wind speed is variable, wind power fails. The weak link in all renewables is storage: without substantial battery capacity, all systems are a failure much of the time and batteries are the most expensive part of the installation, because they fail and are very expensive as well as have to be disposed of upon failure. The true environmental costs of producing solar and wind systems are never discussed, but more energy is used in the manufacture and clean up (disposal of toxic waste) than the systems ever produce in their usable lifetime, plus there is the cost of dismantling a failed residential system. Yes, "Snake Oil" - only good for the seller.
