I am a retired Virginia Commonwealth University professor. I have also been a lifelong fan of shooting sports, and firm believer in the natural human freedoms so well enumerated in the Bill of Rights. Nonetheless, any given right must be balanced against other rights with which it might conflict. The right of persons to carry concealed firearms in public spaces such as University offices and classrooms, courthouses, state office buildings, etc. conflicts with my right to feel free from the fears of armed criminals, crazies, and zealots as I go about my life's business. I strongly support Governor McAuliffe's proposed initiative to ban firearms other than those openly carried by sworn security officials in agency offices under the control of the Executive Branch of the Commonwealth government.
