Smut is everywhere--computers, movies, TV, books, etc. But, I choose not to have the smut in my home or in my child's classroom. "Sexually explicit"--incest, bestiality, pedophilia--sounds like smut to me. As Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said in his attempt to define pornography that even though he could not define it (pornography) he knew what it was when he saw it. Smut is smut! "Indecent, obscene, improper". (Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary)
Keep the smut out of the classroom. Tell me as a parent what books or movies will be taught or discussed in the classroom with my child. Allow me as a parent to be notified as to what is going on or will be taught in my child's classroom. And, if it takes more time for the teacher to examine ALL the books that he or she intends to teach or discuss with my child, then so be it. Spend the time. The teacher must filter out those books that include smut. As a parent, I demand that he or she do so! If the books, movies or reading material contain the so-called "sexually explicit" material...then allow my child to opt-out. Call it what you will...sexually explicit, or what it really is...SMUT!
Teachers, do me a favor, teach "up" not "down".
