Reasons to Preserve the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

As a regional effort, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) provides a framework to move Virginia into a prosperous future. By addressing our dependence on non-renewable energy sources, VA is better positioned to use those limited resources wisely, while simultaneously investing in the State's economy through local initiatives. These initiatives create jobs and provide direct benefits, such as insulation to low-income families that reduce utilities and consumption, helping lift our most vulnerable residents out of poverty. Having spoken with my neighbors, I know that many of them who rent are living in households at or below the poverty line and spending a disproportionate amount of their income on housing (above the recommended 30%, sometimes past 50%) when we factor in the cost of utilities. By shifting our energy production to renewable sources, we help stabilize energy costs over the long-term, and we provide access to options such as solar to those who stand to benefit the most from these resources.

Thank you for your consideration,
