Per Trapper Davis' comments which stated the following: "I'm not saying don't do anything now, but damn, it sure is frustrating to put a lot of time and effort into something, ask for input, ask for input, ask for input and put the information out there for everyone to become familiar with and then get hammered by everyone thinking that there is some big cover-up and whining and complaining that they weren't told, yada, yada, yada ... When in truth, it is their own fault that they weren't paying attention and didn't contribute to help drive the rules in the direction that they wished. The old adage applies ... "IF you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem". "

Well, Trapper and fellow DPOR Board Members, we are taking a stance and making our opinions known.  What else is the 'PUBLIC COMMENT' for?  I am assuming it the time period for the public to voice concerns, opinions, make suggestions, edit, critique, etc. regarding the subject matter.  And I am sorry that you are feeling as though you are being put through the ringer on these regulations...but I , as well as many others, feel that it is quite obvious that they are lacking in numerous areas.  They don't even include standards and codes of conduct, etc.  And the regulations lack the expertise  and knowledge base from important stakeholders (primarily the soils (VAPSS) and onsite (VAAOSE) groups).  And aren't they the most important components to the onsite industry?  I feel as though the major stakeholders are coming to you now with their opinions and suggestions...during this time of PUBLIC COMMENT, with the hopes that you will take into consideration that we want to not only protect our professions in the private sector, but more importantly the health and welfare of OUR Commonwealth.  And isn't DPOR's mission to "The mission of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation is to protect the health, safety and welfare of Virginians, while promoting a competent workforce, fair housing opportunities, and a productive economy.”    And to represent the licensing and standards of professionals?  Shouldn't DPOR want what is best in terms of regulations pertaining to professional licensure and build relationships and understanding of all stakeholders? And not develop some regulation that is missing so many components and isn't a sound piece of work, just to get it out done and off the desk?   What precedent does this set for our industry and our Commonwealth?

I leave you with this, as a fellow soil scientist stated, "I hope that you can understand that we are expecting a better solution for ourselves and for the field of soil science and onsite, some of which may be our kids or other individuals that appreciate this calling. After the day is done we can all relate to the satisfaction of our calling, which is to be outstanding in our fields."  Lets work together to explore a common ground where our interests coincide, and where we can support each other.

We are trying to be a part of the solution by participating in the public comment period and upcoming public hearing.
