Hi,

This movement is so unfortunate. As a non-CACREP graduate of MD I have real concerns to going forward with licensure. Currently, I'm in a research position (at the VA)  which doesn't require licensure, but I would still like to obtain it and work clinically, eventually. Unfortunately, I wouldn't even be able to work with the population of my choice, veterans and their families, here in MD. I am a military family member and would love to give back to those who have served us, but this avenue seems to have closed? Seeing that VA is heading the same road is creating even more concerns and I almost regret to have made the choice to go to school for counseling! What does this mean for new graduates of non-CACREP programs (which I believe are in the majority of the US) and what does this mean for current students? Will we have jobs, will we have spend money for nothing, will we be able to serve the populations we'd like to (underserved and vets- often those with medicare/medicaid and tricare etc.).... will we be able to utilize the great education that we have received?

I will also say that my non-CACREP program has greatly prepared me to work with numerous populations, clinical issues and to do research work! I have been trained in assessments, counseling, had several required externships, classes and professors who have pepared me for the real world. I have loved the diversity of persepctives from PhD's, LCPCs, LCSWs, PsyD profgessors that many CACREP programs do not provide!

I really hope that VA will change it's mind and work towards a considered way for non-CACREP graduates to work in their desired profession. The MH field is important and needed more than ever before and by eliminating non-CACREP clinicians you are increasing issues and not helping those who are in need of MH services. By doing this, you are also working contrary to our ethics code.
