I strongly support the current regulations on abortion centers approved overwhelmingly by the Board of Health. These regulations should be made permanent and continue to include the strongest standards. These regulations are reasonable, common-sense measures to ensure that life-saving equipment is on hand, infections are prevented, and clear written policies and building guidelines are in place. These regulations, which improve upon emergency temporary regulations that have been in place for more than a year, will continue to protect Virginia women who use abortion facilities. Health inspections conducted during this time period---which have turned up hundreds of facility violations---have made clear that the Commonwealth’s abortion industry cannot self-regulate. Permanent regulations will ensure abortion facilities’ accountability for deficiencies. Please maintain strong permanent abortion facility regulations to protect the health and safety of women.
