I oppose Petition 432

This misguided and harmful action would place Virginia on the wrong side of this issue. In addition to being a "solution" for a problem that doesn't exist (except in the minds of the proposers) the regulation affirmatively harms Virginians, of all genders and sexes. The proposed regulation purports "to prevent further harm, both physical and psychological, from males claiming or pretending to be females and gaining access to female-only athletic competitions and private spaces."  Such language is ripe for abuse.  Who determines what "males" this applies to? The only foreseeable outcome is that transgendered people will be targeted for harm. Enforcement of this regulation would be left to the whims of people who do not necessarily have the judgement to make such a determination.

The rule would assume that there are only two categories of humans--male and female. Such a supposition is not scientifically tenable.

We should have a more thoughtful discussion of this issue in public when determining how children can participate in athletics. The rights of all athletes deserve to be protected. This proposed "solution" is a knee-jerk reaction to fear from ignorant people.
