This proposed policy is constructed to create a chilling effect on the teachers of Virginia--when "sexually explicit" is so broadly defined as to include "sexual excitement" (a term that can even be used to describe a character's reaction to their first kiss to those who would save that experience for marriage) and the mere existence of LGBTQIA+ individuals is sexualized (by the very same people crowing for more control over their children's lived experience), teachers will be left to only introduce the most conservative, Christian-approved readings to their students. Regardless of whether their students fall into these groups or if their parents want their children intellectually challenged in the classroom.

Either we are preparing students for life as adults in our challenging, diverse society, or we are swaddling them in cotton and preventing them from engaging with anything outside their sheltered upbringing until they are thrown unceremoniously into careers or college. I believe that schooling in the modern era requires our students to be rigorously challenged academically and taught to respect others unlike themselves (or to respect themselves, in the case of students whose experiences fall outside the sheltered desires of those who support this policy).
