The document "SB656 DRAFT MODEL POLICIES" is a model of vagueness and internal inconsistency that provides no useful guidance on evaluating or developing educational materials for public school students. It purports to address what is a non-existent threat that parents have been told to fear, and in so doing places an enormous burden on public schools. Our schools should not be required to assess every item of educational material in light of what some hypothetical parent might deem "sexually explicit". A parent concerned with "protecting the innocence" of their child should be required to identify the specific threat posed by an item before demanding that it be banned from a public school or that the school provide an aternative item for that child. All children are welcome at public schools, but private school or home schooling may be a better fit for some.
