Real World Experience Aiding Future Veterinarians

This proposal will allows students to gain the real-world experience necessary to be better veterinarians after graduation.

Many comments against the proposal are concerned about supervision and safety of pets.  What students will be allowed to do will be determined by a veterinarian's assessment of the vet student's skills and knowledge and on a case by case basis.  This proposal change does not give students free reign to perform any and all procedures.  In addition, students will be under the supervision of veterinarians as well as veterinary technicians, just as they are during their fourth year of education.  This proposal does not change any of these standards we hold for fourth year veterinary students expected by the public or the veterinary community.  It simply allows students earlier within their veterinary education to begin applying classroom knowledge to the real world.  Knowledge gained in the classroom that is compounded with hands-on experience is solidified for the learner and integral in the life-long process of becoming proficient in a field.

By allowing students, with the approval of a supervising veterinarian, to begin performing more clinical techniques would allow future generations of veterinarians be the best the can be.  All the veterinary students supporting this proposal are not trying to cut corners nor acting on an inflated sense of self, but trying to improve themselves in order to bring the best care to their patients.
