We vehemently disagree with the proposed amendment and uniformly oppose any verbiage that places on our teachers the unnecessary burden of having to censor materials that have already been deemed appropriate for instructional use by our school board. We value our teachers as true professionals and inherently believe that any course materials utilized are chosen because of their worthiness in ensuring that our students receive a rich literary experience in the language arts classroom. This legislation is largely rooted in subjective, ambiguous terms that would open the door for blatant censorship based on personal or moral beliefs. Simply put, evaluating and judging the worthiness of a literary work should not be left up to one individual’s idea of what is appropriate or not.
