I would like a vote of confidence from the state that says, "We believe in the professionalism of our school systems and teachers." Our school system has current policies that provide for "Opt Out and Alternative Assignments" and written rationales for the books the teachers use in the classroom. This is more than adequate. Also, we are here to teach according to the mandated Standards of Learning. Trust us to choose those texts that best meet the needs of our students and to have the professional knowledge to explain "sensitive" or "controversial" topics without bias.
