As a student, I support both the student's and parents' right to know in advance what books will be required reading. Alternative books should be available in addition to opt-out options. Parents and students know what to expect when it comes to sex education in the Health classroom and the same should be true when reading similar material in the assigned books in the English classroom. Simply listing 25 books on a 5-10 page syllabus and handing it out the first day of class doesn't work. It is too late.
