This is how it begins...
Censorship, that is.
How does the board plan on defining controversial or sensitive? Is Dracula sensitive because it involves violence and sexuality? Is The Great Gatsby because its plot revolves around extramarital affairs? What of The Scarlet Letter? What of the Jewish Holocaust, which some claim never happened? For those who believe that this is the case, would they not be offended to discover their child is learning in school that it did happen? What about those who oppose the theory of evolution?
The point is that nearly everything we study in literature, science, and history classrooms may be deemed offensive by someone for some reason. This is a slippery slope to go down, particularly at the high school level in which students are supposed to be prepared for college, the workforce, and the rest of their adult lives--in a controversial world.
I hope the board will reconsider, as this is one step closer to censorship.
