As a dental hygienist I oppose this proposed amendment. Dental scaling is not just a routing cleaning procedure done on patients. It required extensive education as well as clinical training to recognize periodontal disease, tooth decay, oral cancer screenings, etc. We receive specialized and supervised training on disease prevention, periodontal assessment, instrumentation and patient care. Allowing DAs to perform scaling could compromise the quality and safety of patient care! We, as patients, deserve better. Expanding the duties should NEVER come at the expense of patient safety or affect quality of care.
