Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Transgender (and LQBTQ+) youth are three times more likely to commit suicide and have suicidal thoughts than a heterosexual teenager. This is due in part by societal pressure and the conformity they have to impose on themselves to avoid being discriminated against. There needs to be protection in place for transgender youth so that they can express themselves as who they truly are.

If being transgender was a choice, many would rather life their life as their assigned sex at birth (uncomfortable in their skin, longing to be who they want to be) over dealing with the hate and discrimination they would face being transgender. And that is sad. It is not a choice, so treat them just as how anyone would treat a cisgender individual.

This is not about your religion, this is not about a made notion you have that transgender people are predators, this is about them... and making the world a better place for people to live one step at a time.
