BON regulations (18VAC90-20-35) contains a clause that states that “if there is the potential for staff to care for inmates, the last name could be removed from the ID badge.” Since our organization cares for inmates from the local correctional facility, and our staff have been vulnerable to aggression and threats of violence from patients, families, and visitors, we needed to protect our staff somehow. This statement in the BON regulations gives all organizations in VA who provide care to persons in the custody of police, the power to legally remove the last names from the badges of all direct care givers. This is done to improve the safety of our employees, therefore providing a safe work environment.
