I am a Distance Education Veterinary Technician student who has received the majority of my training on the job while under the direct supervision of a licensed DVM and LVT at the practice I work for. Veterinary Technician students are taught and tested in the classroom before being allowed to perform tasks at work. We get valuable hands on experience and guidance from our mentors (DVM). If pet owners must sign a consent form for procedures such as drawing blood, I can see how the student mentors and pet owners may get frustrated with the additonal paperwork and explanation that goes with it which could lead to veterinary practices being less likely to agree to mentor students. Changing now would be a mistake!
