I oppose this petition, which, I believe threatens the integrity of our LPC designation. A masters in clinical psychology and a masters in counseling are not the same, for reasons that many of the earlier commenters have so elequently stated. Counselors and psychologists have very different professional identities and training. I believe that it is important that we, as LPCs, respect and safeguard the uniqueness of our profession and our licensure. Psychologists and Clinical Social Workers certainly do this with their profession. They understand that their education and training are different from ours, and so do not (and would not) allow a masters in counseling to apply toward licensure in their fields. What would it say about counseling and about the LPC desigantion if we allowed such? It is critical that we uphold and stand by our professional standards and the importance of our training as counselors, as opposed to psychologists (or even social workers).
