As a clinician and dental hygiene educator, I oppose permitting dental assistants to perform supragingival scaling with hand or ultrasonic instruments. Patient safety requires scaling to be performed by professionals with the comprehensive education, clinical training, and judgment necessary to recognize disease, assess risk, and use these instruments safely; expanding this duty to dental assistants unnecessarily compromises the standard of care Virginia patients deserve.
