No to Any Addition to Data Centers Diesel Generators Use

Dear DEQ—

I oppose the proposal to allow data centers in VA to utilize diesel generators for anything other than actual emergency use.  Data centers should not be permitted any reasons for increasing their utilization of diesel generators other than for emergency.

Questions for DEQ concerning data centers and diesel generators:

  1. How does this proposal align with DEQ’s own mission to “protect and enhance the environment of Virginia” and its vision of “better air quality” for all Virginians?
  2. How many data centers in Stafford County could be running diesel generators during planned outages?
  3. What kind of warning, if any, would nearby residents get when generators are turned on?
  4. What air quality monitoring will be required, and how will that data be shared with the public?
  5. Will there be a strict time limit on how long diesel generators can operate?
  6. Why is DEQ  making it easier for private data centers to burn dirty fuel instead of requiring cleaner alternatives?

Please uphold your mission and responsibility to protect Virginians, our wildlife, and our watersheds.  Data centers utilization of diesel generators as a back-up energy source should only be for infrequent actual emergencies—not as a frequently used source.  Diesell emissions contain known carcinogens via particulate matter measured in tons per year.  The  tsunami of data center development in the Commonwealth requires increased and vigilant standards and oversight by DEQ.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide public comments.
