The educational background and clinical experience required to obtain a Doctor of Audiology degree fulfills any standard required to dispense hearing aids. The additional licensure that Virginia requires is extremely unneccessary. Unfortunately, at this point we are only attempting to be rid of the "test" required to obtain a hearing aid license in the state of Virginia. I was fortunate enough to take and pass the required test (s) last year for licensure, the wording in the test was archaic and the context was nearly laughable. After four years of taking difficult exams at a doctoral level, it felt strange to sit in a classroom and be treated like a high school student (with a high school level exam). I moved here from practicing in the state of Maryland, where it is understood that hearing aids are in the scope of practice when it comes to Audiology. I truly hope, for the sake of audiology and the people in this state that need quality audiologic services, that Virginia evolves.
