Hold pet stores accountable

Retail stores selling companion animals do not rank highly on my list.  In a perfect world I would love to see them abolished in Virginia as they are elsewhere in the US.  I know owners who purchased pets from retail establishments that turned out to be unhealthy.  It bothers me to know animals are bred for profit while homeless animals linger in animal shelters, many to be euthanized for lack of adoptions.  Shelters are required to pass scrutiny and are monitored.  Retail stores should likewise be monitored and held to high standards.  Enforcement of standards are paramount for the health of the animals and for those who spend great sums of money for a "pedigree" companion animals.  "Adopt, don't shop".
