In Virginia, municipal and nonprofit animals shelters must conform to high welfare standards; however, for-profit businesses such as pet stores do not. I strongly believe that pet stores should be held to the same high standards in order to protect the animals they keep/sell and the customers they service.
I am asking that the proposed regulations be amended to hold for-profit animal businesses (such as pet stores) as accountable as we hold municipal and nonprofit animal shelters. In addition, penalties for animal welfare violations also should be put in place.
Thank you.
