I live in central Virginia, not far from where the Envigo testing facility was just shut down. I was incredibly proud of my state for finally taking real, tangible action to help the dogs at that facility. I read news articles about it where people from other states were applauding Virginia’s actions, and I felt like Virginia was leading the way for other states to follow suit. I think in order to continue to be an example, Virginia needs to require for-profit pet stores to meet, at minimum, the same welfare standards to which animal shelters are held. Consumers should be protected from the shady practices of puppy mills and commercial pet stores the same way they are when they adopt an animal from a shelter.
