Support the NAB exam

Dear Ms. Hahn,

The Alzheimer’s Association appreciates the hard work and dedication of assisted living administrators and staff to provide a quality home for Virginians with Alzheimer’s disease in assisted living facilities. In 2005, the association partnered with several advocacy and provider groups to pass legislation to require licensure of assisted living administrators. Today, we continue to work together with providers to provide the best possible care for people with dementia in assisted living. To that end:

The Alzheimer’s Association supports requiring the national examination as a requirement for licensure of assisted living administrators.

Consideration for requiring a state examination in contrast to a national examination was carefully reviewed and rejected by both the Advisory Task Force and the Board of Long Term Care Administrators when regulations were developed. The association believes requiring a national examination rather than a state exam is the most effective means of assuring the validity and reliability of testing for administrators' knowledge regarding administering an assisted living facility.
