It was my pleasure to teach at Excelsior College back in the early 1990s when the program was called Regents College of the State University of New York. For several years I administered the Clinical Performance in Nursing examination (CPNE), a clinical exam taken at the conclusion of the student's course of study. The exam took place in an acute care hospital over a 3-day weekend. The test itself was extremely rigorous, with detailed and specific criteria for measuring the achievement of the behaviors and skills needed by a new graduate. If a student was successful on the CPNE, I was confident they could safely practice . The CPNE is still a required component of the program; I would wholeheartedly support that Virginia allow for licensure of Excelsior graduates.
