Controversy is Unavoidable: Teach students how to engage appropriately with it

Trust your teachers to guide students with appropriate text choices that enhance the learning process. Simply avoiding controversial topics is not acceptable. Controversy surrounds us and students must learn to navigate it. First, what is controversial to one may not be controversial to another.  Secondly, educating students to handle controversial topics and instructing them to engage in appropriate discussions is a life skill. One should not necessarily avoid controversy, but instead be ready to aptly deliberate about the topic. It's a scary thought when you look at the banned book lists that roam around. Many are eliminated because of the controversy, yet they represent instances that occur in real life. We should not ignore these topics/situations, but embrace them as a part of life and understand way to deal with them appropriately. Please do not pass this amendment. Trust that you have credentialed and hired quality teachers who can make the decisions the are best for the students.
