In an effort to provide greater transparency, and in keeping with Virginia's regulations on sex education (FLE), and movie policies of many counties throughout the Commonwealth, I support advance parental notification (and the identification) of assigned books containing "sensitive" or sexually explicit material along with opt-out opportunities for students who do not wish to be present during classroom discussions of "sensitive" or sexually explicit material. More information, choice and transparency allows parents the ability to partner with teachers so that the child's best interest is served. Academic freedom is expanded, and not restricted, when more choices are offered and viewpoints considered.
