As a dental hygienist of 28 yrs, it is in my opinion this proposal was accepted not taking in account patient care but how the bottom line affects the Doctor's practice financially. The scope of practice the dental hygienist is required to conform to due to licensure does not equate with the new allowability of the dental assistance performing dental hygiene duties. Not only does limited scaling education pose a problem, but also the lack of knowledge in the initial assessment to determine the type of scaling needed.  Dental hygienist are specialist in the field of patient oral health same as an endodontist is in root canals and such. Most dentists receive minimal education in hygiene application and it shows when they are tasked to perform cleanings. If addressing the dental hygiene shortest is the goal then proposals such as reciprocity nationally, addressing the factory line schedules and dental hygiene autonomy would be more effective solutions. Further negatives of dental assistance performing hygiene duties are as follows: there is no accountability that the training hours will actually be met, the training hours proposed are minimal to the hours for a hygienist to be licensed and most umportantly it subjects the patient to sub par care.  This bill has done a terrific job of diminishing the role of dental hygienist as licensed providers in an already toxic environment so the Ada could successfully financially back dentists and their practices.
