Saying no to dental assistants scaling

Dental assistants are not qualified to scale even with the “training” from dentist. Scaling is much more than a simple cleaning. The purpose of it is to prevent further disease from damaging the periodontium from further bone loss, inflammation, and bacteria from traveling to other parts of our body. If dental assistants are scaling, it will cause more harm than good because there will be a lack of proper treatment for patients. Patients will be at higher risk of dental decay and poor dental health in general without the proper guidance of a hygienist. People deserve quality care from individuals who are licensed. For example, if you were a patient at a hospital, you would not want a certified nursing asssitant to be doing duties a registered nurse would be doing for you.
