I understand that there is a perceived work force shortage, but this is not the solution. However, statistics do not show an incorrect dentist/dental hygienist ratio within the state. Individuals who are not educated in prevention, nor do they get the 2000 to 3000 hours of hands-on training with patient care, are subject to purposeful, supervised neglect. Dental assistants do not receive the education or the rigorous hours in oral anatomy, biology, periodontal disease, etc. Scaling above the gums is not the solution to getting patients in to be seen for their “cleanings “. Disease lives below the gums, and disrupting bacteria below the gums is essential for overall health and well-being. Insurance fraud is being done too because patients will not receive the full service that they or the insurance companies are being charged.
