With the waiver, we are permitted to hire and manage attendant care in our home for our son that is developmentally delayed. We have struggled for years to find trustworthy, dependable and adequate caregivers due to the very low hourly rate of pay. It has increased slightly for ROS (rest of state) to $10.50 per hour, (May 1, 2021) however, is no match for what a person can earn at Walmart, fast food, or even twirling a sign for the tax preparers.  Those employers offer benefits, paid time off and incentives that simply are not included with the state provided assistance. Unemployment benefits have not helped this issue, which we are all aware of. This has put my family and many others in crisis situations, while also trying to retain our own jobs. I am actually puzzled that many case management folks have said in the last year "those that have family members to offer care... are the only ones receiving care...". If we know our most vulnerable population is at risk, why are we reacting (poorly) and not proactively ensuring that we have assistance? I ask that the hourly rate for state provided caregivers be increased to the competitive hourly rate (and living wage) of $15.00 per hour and some type of benefit package be introduced. No one wants this to cascade into more of a crisis than it already is. This funding may be a temporary resource, however, it gives added time to secure a permanent solution.
