Encourage participation in emergency demand response to promote reliability using DMME contract

Through the DMME's competitively bid contract, participants in Virginia have earned millions while contributing to grid reliability. These programs are offered by PJM, the independent system operator of the utility grid in the Mid Atlantic (from New Jersey down to us in Virginia, and across to Chicago). This grid serves 70 million consumers including the majority of Virginians.

in 2018, 275 different participants, including higher ed, community college, K12s, government and utility clients agreed to be a resource if the grid was approaching a blackout. When called, they curtail using a variety of assets, personalized to the capabilities of the particular client through a partnership with CPower. These capacity resources not only keep the lights on at residences and hospitals in the time of grid stress, but they also allow for the retirement of old generation equipment. For additional information about retirement of generation due to demand response, please see the PJM website (www.pjm.com).
