Action | Regulations for Licensure of Abortion Facilities |
Stage | Proposed |

Abortion is clearly a surgical procedure. As such it has the same risks as any other outpatient surgery. One abortionist currently practicing in Alexandria was reprimanded by the Virginia Board of Medicine for botching an abortion performed in his office under local anesthesia. (The official records of the Board are available online.) This doctor failed to properly utilize ultrasound, and the woman had to undergo an emergency hysterectomy at a local hospital. Her life is forever changed as a result.
Had the proposed regulations been in effect, this situation would likely not have occurred. Women deserve better than this. It is clearly in their interest to require that abortion facilities meet the standards provided by these regulations.
