This will not improve safe practice for women

To call this an advancement in the safety of abortion practices in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a misnomer at best. I call it an outrage. Procedural first trimester abortions are completely safe for 97% of patients. About 2.5% of patients experience complications that can be handled at the women's clinics. That leaves about 0.5% of all patients requiring more serious or surgical interventions post surgical abortion. That's actually a pretty good statistic in terms of patient safety. Much better than say, colonoscopies or plastic surgery also performed on an outpatient basis, yet, somehow, not included in these "emergency safety" considerations. As a nurse, I am completely for always seeking ways to improve patient safety, but clearly, this is not the actual concern at hand here. This is about placing undo burden onto clinics in order to bring them to their knees. The people that will suffer? ALL the women in our Commonwealth. By making abortion less accessible, you will encourage illegal abortions, not to mention increased rates of suicide. Worldwide, illegal abortions kill 13% of ALL women. Wow! Now that's a scary statistic!! You don't have to agree with a woman's choice, but please, keep SAFE options accessible!! Our Grandmothers can tell the horror stories, let's not give our teenage girls the same opportunity.
