Do not withdraw Virginia from RGGI, a proven tool to reduce emissions, improve health

We urge you to cease efforts to withdraw from RGGI, a proven incentive system that reduces harmful emissions and delivers tangible benefits. Since Virginia began participating in RGGI, emissions from power plants are down 12% annually*. RGGI auctions have generated $590 million* directed towards critical flood mitigation planning and projects as well as energy efficiency improvements for low income housing across Va. By also improving air quality, reducing childhood and adult asthma, these investments help millions of Virginians across the Commonwealth. While we understand the desire to REDUCE Virginians’ electricity costs, increasing energy efficiency and shifting to renewable energy resources DO SAVE ratepayers money. RGGI works in tandem with Virginia’s planned transition to clean energy resources as required by the Virginia Clean Economy Act. Rather than undercutting RGGI, Virginia should be championing this program, ensuring we leverage all available federal funds to hasten our clean energy transition so we benefit from lower energy costs, improved air quality and better health for decades to come.

* Fact check: “[Virginia’s] carbon emissions from power plants have fallen 12% annually during the last two years.] ENN Story here. Auction 59 and cumulative proceeds from RGGI by state here.
