Commenter: A Former teacher and concerned grandparent

BACK TO BASICS

One reason I retired was that the teaching in Fairfax County was below par and could not tolerate it.  For years emphasis has been in the wrong place.   The quality of teacher is just fine, but WHAT they are expected to teach is just plain wrong.   If an honest survey were to be given to teachers and administration actually listened, our students would be receiving a better education.

Students need basic skills.  They need to master concepts in a grade level before moving on to the next concept.  Reading, writing, math, science, critical thinking skills and TRUE history without bias and judgement are the critical issues.

Every student has a right to be treated with respect and value.   I believe teachers have this skill.   The issues being crammed down students' throats are political and should be left for the home.   The only social issues taught in school should be respect for others, good manners, and strict adherence to rules so that each child is able to access the curriculum.

This has all gotten out of hand.  Students have so many "rights" that grades are dumbed down,  the behavior is not conducive to learning and now they want to indoctrinate our children with these ideas.

Go back to teaching what is important in schools, THE BASICS and leave political and social issues to the parents.
