I am a Virginia resident, an avid sportsman, who is actively involved with Trout Unlimited, a conservation organization dedicated to restoring all streams to a more pristine place for all to enjoy. Streams affected by poultry waste in Virginia have impaired waters and are experiencing fish kills and intersex bass being studied by USGS. The fish kills have reduced recreational value of the affected streams and greatly limited the sportsman dollars flowing into the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia.
Stream contamination such as what is occurring in the Shenandoah Valley and its rivers is always someone else's problem, seemingly the concern and domain of 'tree huggers' UNTIL a calamity hits the human populations--then the recriminations begin. You in our Congress and government agencies are totally complicit UNLESS you proactively help forestall what I believe is the inevitable conclusion of unregulated pollution, largely the byproduct of the poultry industry along the Shenandoah Valley. I urge you to become educated and sponsor or otherwise provide visible support to regulate and end excess poultry waste being spread, especially where it can wash off and eventually reach a stream!
I and my sportsmen friends strongly support the pending regulations regarding poultry waste! Regulations are needed to protect the interests of everyone who enjoys the river and especially the residents who receives drinking water from the river. We are counting on you to protect this natural resource for you, me, our families and future generations. Failure to do so will encourage widespread disregard for the health of our rivers and the health of all those who drink the water, further increasing human suffering and health care costs.
