I am a parent with two students in Arlington County Public Schools. Both of my children have friends and family members who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. They celebrate it. They celebrate their friends and family. They are happy that their friends and family can express who they really are at their core. In fact, they often don't see any kind of difference and just see the kind and fun friend/family who they are. And I am so proud that they are being loyal, caring friends.
Not everyone is supportive. But that is not the role of government. Public schools need to provide strong clear guidance that allows all students to focus on school regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. My children and I support this guidance for that reason.
