Regarding Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools:
It is difficult to know where to begin. This proposal is egregiously one sided. Fortunately in the United States we live under the freedom of expression-available to every citizen.
This proposal is giving too much power an control to one social group. By requiring enforcement of these ideals in our school system, it is completely alienating the rights of the non transgender population.
If every person is equal, then every person should be given equal say. Is the general public able to vote on such proposals? How is opportunity being provided to balance different viewpoints?
A school could easily provide special accommodation for students with transgender identification issues. As a parent I have grave concerns about the opportunity for a young man to be able to enter a female locker room or bathroom, and vice versa.
Some questions are not addressed. For instance, if a school does not participate, does this limit them from receiving government support?
We must be cautious that such proposals do not become based in agenda: they must be representative of the entire population.
This could force teachers and educational staff members at all levels to make drastic decisions based on ethical and moral values that could end professions for which they have been trained.
