I write in support of the Model Policies on the Treatment of Transgender Students, because I believe all students, including anyone who identifies in the Transgender/Gender Non-Comforming/Nonbinary (TGNCNB) community, should have equal access to education where they can thrive and reach their full potential.
I am currently in my fourth year in college and I am part of the Executive Board in Spectrum, the LGBTQ+ organization at Christopher Newport University. I hold the positions of Historian and Events Chair in this group. I find it so vital for Virginia to have schools that are supportive and inclusive to transgender and nonbinary students, because to this day there are individuals in academic settings where they aren’t being respected to the best degree that they deserve. This proposed guidance would definitely make a difference to those who are students in the TGNCNB community because they deserve to belong in school and not have to consider going somewhere else just because someone discriminates and/or violates their identity.
This proposed rule will make Virginia schools a better place to learn for transgender and nonbinary students, which creates a better learning environment for all. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring safe and welcoming schools for all Virginia students.
Sincerely,
EJ Mojica
