As a parent with children in Fairfax County public schools and as a Registered Nurse, I strongly support this guidance. It is critical that all our students be given the support they need to succeed in school and that evidence based guidelines be put in place to guide educators to help make this possible. We know that transgender and non-binary students who receive support at school and at home can be healthy and thrive and those who face discrimination struggle with their education and their physical and mental health. No one should need to worry about being called the wrong name or pronouns or not being able to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identitiy at school. Additionally, educators need guidelines to help them do their best for their students. All Virginians deserve the opportunity to thrive.
