Landscape Architects Must Retain Licensure

Landscape Architects are licensed for a reason: our work directly addresses and protects the health, safety, and welfare of the public. We design, manage, and are involved in projects that require specific knowledge and expertise regarding - but not limited to - stormwater management, construction methodologies and administration, space planning, project implementation, environmental protection, and design for pedestrian, vehicular, and bicycle safety. Our work often requires Federal, state, and/or local permits that necessitate plans designed and sealed by a licensed professional. Because of our broad range of education and practice, we are often charged to lead teams of other licensed professionals. If the practice of Landscape Architecture is de-regulated, not only will the public be deprived of truly well-rounded expert professionals but Landscape Architects will be deprived of projects that utilize our full range of ability. We will no longer be able to compete with other professions who retain licensure; we would therefore be prevented from obtaining more-complex projects, engaging in certain business relationships, and serving the Commonwealth on the equal footing we deserve.
