Safety First

I, like many others, would LOVE to see schools reopen in the fall and see my students face to face. But, I believe it's important to do so SAFELY and RESPONSIBLY. This means following CDC guidelines, everyone wearing face masks/shields, maintaining social distancing, and limiting how many people are in the school buildings in a given time.

Yes, face masks are uncomfortable, but they are necessary. This is not a typical, seasonal flu. This is a pandemic and many have died. Just this weekend an 8 year old girl died from the Corona virus. Face shields are easier to wear and might be an easier option for schools. They also are helpful for deaf students and those hard of hearing (who are often not diagnosed until much later).

We need to ensure that we are protecting students and staff - yes, teachers and staff matter and we deserve to have our well being looked after too. We need to ensure that we are being equitable because students don't all have the same resources and privileges at home, if they even have a home and food.

There's more to this than just getting your kids out of your hair or to returning to "normal life." I'm sure many of us have learned a lot during this time of change and reflection. We will never be back to normal. It's time to create a NEW normal where students and staff are safe, social justice is at the forefront, and we are cognizant of trauma and aid in healing from that trauma.
