Please follow safety guidelines for students & staff.

We all know that the majority of our students learn best in person and in our classrooms. However, if that cannot be accomplished safely, then it needs to wait. Perhaps our school-aged children are the least vulnerable (though MSI-C is a concern), but they go home to their families every night. How do you console a student who realizes they got their grandmother sick by bringing the virus home from school? No child wants that responsibility. We also know that the majority of VA school districts can't manage 6-foot distancing in their classrooms with full rosters. 25% bus capacity will mean either huge increases in budget needs for more buses/drivers, or students arriving over the course of several hours with doubleback after doubleback for each bus. Is this more conducive to learning than remote instruction? It's certainly less safe. And please don't forget that sub-N95 grade masks only help others, not the wearer. So if we're going to ask teachers (who are, by virtue of age, inherently at greater risk than their students) to go into classrooms with students, we must ensure that they are protected by requiring students wear masks, too. You know the science. You know the CDC guidance on what would be required to open schools safely. Please make the right choice for the continued health of our communities.
